Volunteer Roles

Here is a sampling of Volunteer roles for each FIRST® program.

*Please note: All Jr.FLL volunteers must be comfortable working with and encouraging young children ages 6-9.

Jr.FLL event volunteer positions

Volunteer for a Jr.FLL event in your area

Jr.FLL volunteer opportunities at the FIRST Championship.

Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL)

Local Expos happen between October and April of each year. The Jr.FLL World Festival Expo coincides with the FIRST Championship held in April of each year.

Closing Ceremony Volunteer (Must be organized and have the ability to stand for long periods)

Floater Volunteer (Must be able to go-with-the-flow)

Load Out Volunteer (Must be comfortable in physically active role)

Team Escort Volunteer (Must be organized and have the ability to stand for long periods)

Jr. FLL Coach

Jr.FLL Coach

Coaches guide teams through their challenge, which includes creating a LEGO model with a motorized part and making a ‘Show Me’ poster that explains what the team learned. They keep teams on track and ask “leading questions,” but they are mainly there to make sure the children have fun.

Jr.FLL Mentor

Mentors, at the Jr.FLL level, help Coaches organize events as well as find resources and events in their area.

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL)

Events occur between November and January each year. The FLL World Festival coincides with the FIRST Championship held in April of each year.

Judge Assistant Volunteer (Must be highly organized)

Load-in/Load-out Volunteer (Must have the ability to stand for long periods and lift)

Judging Queuer Volunteer (Must be organized and have the ability to stand for long periods)

Pit Runner Volunteer (Must have the ability to stand for long periods)

Robot Game Queuer Volunteer (Must be a strong time manager and have the ability to stand for long periods)

Usher Volunteer (Must have the ability to stand for long periods)

FLL Coach

An FLL Coach provides support to his or her team and guides them in completing the season’s Challenge. The Coach asks questions, encourages the team to explore options, promotes teamwork and participation by all members, exemplifies Gracious Professionalism™, reinforces FLL’s Core Values and commits to having fun.

FLL Mentor

An FLL Mentor has a certain expertise a team may need. The Mentor may contribute their expertise through instruction, guidance to the team, or serve as a resource on a one-time or multiple-time basis.

FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC)

Events are conducted October through March with the FTC World Championship to be held in April of each year.

An FTC Coach/Mentor works with his or her students by helping them to develop skills and to design and build a successful robot. They guide teams through any issues they encounter, making them stronger in both their school and personal lives. They inspire students in ways far beyond science and technology and enable both students and adults to appreciate the value of sportsmanship, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism® in a way that might not be possible otherwise.

FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC)

Regional Competitions take place Thursday through Saturday each week throughout the month of March. Each event requires a 1-4 day volunteer commitment. The FIRST Championship event takes place in April of each year.

Pit Administration Support Volunteer (Must be a good communicator)

Practice Field Attendant Volunteer (Must be a good time manager)

Safety Exit Monitor Volunteer (Must be upbeat and have the ability to sit for long periods)

Team Queuing Volunteer (Must have the ability to stand for long periods)

Lounge Monitor Volunteer (Must be upbeat and have the ability to sit for long periods)

Registration/Information Table Volunteer (Must be upbeat and detail oriented)

FRC Mentor

FRC Mentor

FRC Mentors play a vital role in the success of their students. Mentors work extensively with team members during the build season, designing, building, and fabricating a functional robot for Competition. Their expertise is the catalyst for the team’s and students’ success. FRC Mentors are the major distinction between the FRC program and other robotic competitions as they are wholly the professional role model for the student. Mentors engage and inspire students in ways far beyond science and technology. They enable both students and adults to appreciate the value of sportsmanship, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.
